Birds on a cold spring evening

We walk along the edge of the ocean. It's 7 pm. Off to the west, dark clouds hide the sunset, and rain is falling. But my hands are cold and there's snow in the air, I can feel it. It's glove weather. We watch a Rufous Hummingbird settle at the top of a shrub. It's going to have a cold night and will need to find a good nectar source in the morning. The Hooded Mergansers, on the other hand, are busy splashing in the pond, bathing--oblivious to the chill in the air.
